GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY
"Today, business operates in a global marketplace, and therefore, the need for
standardization of the way we manage business operations is important for the
quality of service or product.
We are all partners in sustainability of our world's Quality, Environment, Health & Safety management, impacting millions of people around the world. Global adversity trends include: depletion of natural resources, climate change, water quality, extinction of animals, quality control on products, globalization - carrying out business, living with greater job insecurity.
Solutions to improve global adversity include: Management of Business Operations and our resources to remain competitive on a global basis. We need to identify and manage our risks in business whether related to the quality of the product/service we offer or to environment, health and safety and financial. The way we manage has an impact not only on our business, but our communities, country and the international marketplace.
The international standards for management systems has been the growing criteria (framework) used
by businesses around the world to implement effective and efficient management systems for
Quality - ISO 9001, Environment - ISO 14001 and Occupational Health and Safety - OHSAS 18001.
Internal and third party audits verify the conformance of the management system to international standards.
Small and medium enterprises (SME) make up the majority of businesses today and
it is too costly for them to implement management systems to international standards
to keep competitive in the export marketplace. This is the reason Pilot developed the first
international on-line E-learning to assist the SMEs.
Management systems to international standards also assists foreign professionals in job opportunities globally."

UNDERSTANDING ISO 14001
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
|
|
|
The International Standard ISO 14001 is an
environmental management standard. Its intent is to
guide organizations in managing the impact their
products, services and operations have on the
environment. For example their usage of raw
materials, resources, technology, systems,
emissions, waste, etc. ISO 14001 is the document
that organizations can be audited against through
self declaration or registration.
The Driving Forces for ISO 14001 - Environmental
Management Systems (EMS) are: Stakeholders,
Investors, Public, Government, Financial
Institutions, Insurance Companies, International
Development, Company Managers-looking to improve performance
and profits.
In Canada, a precedent has been set regarding a
court case which required a company to be
registered to ISO 14001, as part of their fine. EMS
may provide a defence for due diligence and
minimizes potential liability - CYA (Cover your
Assets ©). Directors, Managers and even upper
management are accountable for all environmental
issues within a company.
The benefits of having an EMS is that it
requires a company to identify its risks and put in place
planning, implementation, monitoring and measurement to ensure controls are in place.
It is a voluntary approach. It demonstrates a
company's environmental responsibility.
Many companies have found that having an EMS
gives them a competitive advantage because
companies like to deal with those who manage their
environmental issues, i.e. the "GREEN"
industries.
The overall objective an EMS satisfies is
"continual improvement" of a company's management
by setting objectives and targets and evaluating business practices, improving
compliance and non-conformities.
By implementing EMS systems, companies have
reduced operating costs. They have identified
issues in process design, operations and
implemented changes resulting in improved resource
utilization. Using waste minimization, energy
conservation and recycling initiatives, companies
operate more cost effectively, giving companies
total control of their operations.
